Hvergelmir ( Hver )

A two-team tournament map from Creation
Commissioned for the Tournament of Blood, May 2001

Revised 10/21/03

v1.4 Revision Notes: The south has a corrected number of archers revised to 22/28 which matches the north bowmen. Easy fix. Wish someone had pointed this out a year or two earlier.

:::: 1 - Introduction
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings and welcome to Hvergelmir, a new tournament map from Creation. This differs significantly from previous Creation releases in that it was commissioned and built specifically for a tournament. We did nothing that would be considered "risky." We attempted nothing innovative in the design. We gave you guys what you seem to like - a variation on a theme.

A winding river snakes down the center, intersecting a Creep wall three times. As such, it forms U-shaped areas bounded by river and wall. Within each is a village, one ruined and smoking, with freshly-dug graves, and one intact. The player bases are a ruined castle and a ruined cathedral. Just enough stuff to make it different, without really attempting anything new. We hope y'all like it.

Neither side knew specifically how the feud had started

A ruined castle adorned one side of the great wall which seperated the lands of the two hamlets, while the other side was greeted by the morning sun with the colored light coming through the stained glass of a ruined cathedral. Some of the elders on both sides knew vaguely of a time many years before, when two brothers struggled over the inheritence of their father's land, one of them a great warrior, the other a sage priest. The wall settled the issue, but only after many decades of war had left both brothers dead and their respective sanctuaries destroyed. The oldest man in the eastern hamlet claimed that his father was a veteran of these battles, and that the pathetic rabble that remained of the once-great armies claimed the land for themselves upon finding all heirs dead, those who had supported the priest settling east of the wall, those who supported the warrior settling the west.

The hamlets were still very small, but they might in time grow, merge together, and become a great trading center, the meaning of the wall forgotten and often speculated upon, most of it dismantled to build great works. But old feuds have uncanny vitality, and so these hopes were soon dashed in the worst possible way. The men of the east returned from their fields to find the houses smoking and ruined, mere foundations remaining of their meeting hall, and freshly-dug graves planted in the defiled earth. It may have been the work of a roving band of thieves or brigands, but in the turmoil and anguish which followed, that possibility was not even remotely considered. And so two great armies gathered, one fighting to avenge the deaths of their wives and children and the burning of their home, the other to defend itself from a similar fate. As the sun rose that morning, the land would see battle once more for the first time in nearly a hundred years....

New unit: Thell Warrior (Available on Light mesh)

The Thell Warrior is a warrior with a new look who has a new ability that is the first of its kind in Myth. The Thell Warrior is a three-point melee unit who is slightly better than a regular warrior, and has the special ability to perform a shield-block. This is a maneuver that will momentarily protect the Thell warrior from arrows and other kinetic projectiles coming at him from the front. The warrior raises his shield for one second, during which time arrows, soulless spears, etc will break and bounce off without doing any damage. Rarely, you can even knock away molotovs, although this is very unreliable. NOTE: This will not protect the warrior from projectiles that hit him in the back or on the sides.
